Nicole Murphy (who played in several of the local leagues both co-ed and women’s) was in South Africa with her family last week for the World Cup when she was hit by a drunk driver and killed on June 17. Nicole and two of her siblings were hit by the car. Her brother is currently in ICU with a critical head injury in South Africa. The challenge right now isn’t just getting Nicole’s body back home, but that Brian requires a special medical plane that health insurance will not cover. The cost of the medical jet is expected to be in excess of $300,000. The family would like to get their family home so they can mourn Nicole’s passing and get Brian the medical attention he needs.

A Benefit Game in honor of Nicole will be held on July 3rd. The details will be announced soon. The plan is to get as many people and teams (from the various leagues) involved as possible and to do that we would like to have representatives from each team play in a game. There will be T-shirts, food, and music. Depending upon the response, we may have more than one game. The registration “fee” per player will be $25 (teams can come together to sponsor a player, or players can solicit donations – certainly the more money donated the better) and we will be collecting donations at the door as well. All money collected will go straight to Nicole’s family. Checks can be made payable to “Murphy Family Support Fund” and mailed to Rachel Riser, 5016 Pitt Street, New Orleans, LA 70115.
